Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Israel has eliminated the latest Hamas chief, Mohammed Sinwar, but has provided no further details or proof.
Neither the Israel Defence Ministry (IDF) nor Netanyahu himself made a statement specifically on the killing of Sinwar, but his name was just one of the Hamas leaders that Netanyahu listed as killed by Israel since the beginning of the war during a press conference on Wednesday.
“We have killed tens of thousands of terrorists. We killed (Mohammed) Deif, (Ismail) Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Sinwar,” Netanyahu said.
Hamas hasn’t publicly commented.
Mohammed Sinwar’s brother, Yahya Sinwar was “the mastermind” of the October 7th attack and was killed in October 2024. Since then, Mohammed has been referred to as the chief of Hamas by Israeli and Arab media.
Earlier this month, Israeli media mentioned that Sinwar was a target of an airstrike on a hospital in Khan Younis in Gaza on May 13. IDF said it was targeting the “command and control centre” of Hamas located beneath the hospital.
Netanyahu made the statement about Sinwar’s elimination at a conference held on the 600th day of the war, which started with Hamas crossing the border and killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages. On Monday, Palestinian officials said they agreed to the US ceasefire plan.
According to the plan, Israel and Palestine would declare a 60-day truce. Hamas would give ten hostages back and an undefined number of bodies. Israel, in return, would have to release Hamas captives. Israel denied that this plan was proposed by the US. US officials have also said the deal being discussed is “unacceptable”.
Since October 7, 54,000 people have died in Palestine because of Israeli army actions, 5,000 of which are children, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.
Yesterday, the UN said, dozens of civilians were injured while trying to collect aid from a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation site that is supported by Israeli military after Israeli soldiers opened fire in the crowd.
