ICE-detained Palestinian activist released

On his release, Mohsen Mahdawi addressed Trump saying: "I'm not afraid of you".

Permanent US resident Mohsen Mahdawi, a student Pro-Palestine activist, has been released from detention by a Vermont district judge.

Mahdawi was detained on April 14 when he showed up for a naturalisation interview in Vermont.

On Wednesday, local time, Vermont district judge Jeffrey Crawford ordered Mahdawi’s release despite the government’s request for a seven-day delay. Although the immigration case against Mahdawi continues, he will now be able to attend his graduation in May and fight deportation on the outside. His lawyer Luna Droubi promised to “keep fighting until Mohsen is free for good”.

After Mahdawi walked out of the court room, he addressed Donald Trump in his speech.

“I am not afraid of you,” he said.

The Trump administration ordered his deportation saying that Mahdawi’s activity in the US “would have serious adverse foreign policy consequences and would compromise a compelling US foreign policy interest”. Droubi describes claims against her client as a “disgrace to the US Constitution”.

Following the release, assistant secretory of the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin said: “No judge, not this one or another, is going to stop the Trump administration from restoring the rule of law to our immigration system.”

Earlier, US authorities detained Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk, student Pro-Palestine activists. They’re still held in custody fighting for their release.
