Jason Derulo faces sexual harrassment lawsuit

Derulo is currently a judge on The Voice Australia

American singer-songwriter Jason Derulo has been sued for the alleged sexual harassment of a young female artist.

Aspiring singer Emaza Gibson claims that Derulo had intentions of having sexual relations with her after she signed with Atlanta Records.

Derulo reached out to the now 25-year-old in August 2021 with a proposition which required her to produce an album and mixtape in 10 months for his music imprint, Future History. Gibson claims she had dealt with unwanted invitations, aggressive behaviour, and fear that her career would be jeopardised if she did not have personal relations with him.

“I’m at this point in my life right now, it’s very heartbreaking,” she told NBC. “I have anxiety, I’m traumatised. I’ve dealt with inhumane work situations. I’m at this point where I’m back to zero and I have nothing.”

The lawsuit was filed yesterday in Los Angeles County Superior Court after Derulo ended Gibson’s record deal.

It claims that she was given “inappropriately large amounts of alcohol” which she refused to drink after only taking one sip and accused him of demanding “sex in exchange for success”.

“I told him that I wasn’t a drinker… you’re not listening to that the first time I tell you, and you’re still pushing on me,” she said. “It’s, like, pressure at this point.”

Derulo allegedly responded by telling Gibson to embrace “goal skin and fish scales”, slang for rituals involving sex and a strain of cocaine. Gibson said he was persistent on going out for drinks, and even providing alcohol in the studio, but she wanted to keep their relationship professional after feeling pressured to drink.

Derulo is currently a judge on The Voice Australia and has hits such as ‘Talk Dirty’, ‘Whatcha Say’, and ‘In My Head’.
