Man arrested allegedly making threats to carry out an attack in Melbourne’s CBD

The man was arrested outside a fast food restaurant and is set to be interviewed.

Victoria Police have arrested a man after he allegedly made a threatening phone call to a news outlet on Thursday night.

Police said the man called Channel Nine in Sydney warning them of an “incident” potentially taking place in Melbourne’s CBD on Bourke Street.

Channel Nine immediately contacted Crime Stoppers. Extra police actively patrolled the CBD area looking for a person of interest.

Inspector Dale Huntingdon said any threat, no matter what it is, is taken very seriously.

“Our whole aim was to identify who this individual was but also locate and arrest and understand what this threat was,” he said.

“We’ve also had [multiple] streets mentioned as well, so Bourke Street was one, but that was just one of a few.”

Victoria Police Media Officer John McLaughlan said that uniformed officers and the Critical Incident Response Team located the individual in front of a fast food restaurant on Swanston Street. The man was arrested just after 7:30pm.

“While the investigation is ongoing, there is no ongoing threat to the community.”

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still unknown as the 31-year-old with no fixed address is set to be interviewed.
