A blockbuster weekend of sport is ahead of us, with plenty of sporting leagues reaching their summit.
Scott Pendlebury set to break AFL games record
In Round 11 of the AFL season, all eyes will turn to the MCG as Collingwood great Scott Pendlebury is set to reach a record 433 AFL games against the West Coast Eagles on Saturday afternoon.
Pendlebury debuted for the Magpies in 2006, and has gone on to play 432 games across 20 years for the black and white. In his time at the club, he’s won two premierships, one Norm Smith medal, four Anzac day medals, five Copeland trophies, six All-Australian selections, as well as being club captain from 2014-2022.
He will eclipse former North Melbourne star Brent Harvey’s previous record of 432 AFL games, which he set in 2016.
Pendlebury spoke about his achievement and what it means to sit amongst the game’s greats.
“It makes me reflect when you see the messages and I was speaking to Boomer [Brent Harvey] last week when he came into the club about those guys, champions of the game and it probably sits uncomfortably with me that you’re on that level with all those guys,” he said.
“I think all of us at one stage were just that kid in the stands that used to come and watch these guys.”
Pendlebury will don a gold number 10 on his back to mark the occasion.
The Pies are in desperate need of a win after falling short against the Sydney Swans and Geelong Cats in the last two rounds. This has left them in 11th on the AFL ladder, only two points out from a wildcard finals spot.
Whereas the Eagles come to Melbourne in form, after upsetting the GWS Giants at home last week by 17 points. West Coast will look to record their fourth win of the year and jump out of the bottom four.
English Premier League final gameweek action
The 2025/26 Premier League campaign draws to a close early Monday morning, with plenty of relegation and European qualification permutations to play out.
The biggest story lies with Tottenham Hotspur, who are set to host Everton at home, with Premier League safety or despair on the line. They currently sit two points clear of the relegation zone, needing one point or more to secure top flight safety.
Tottenham are currently one of the richest clubs in world soccer. A potential relegation would be a huge shock to the world game.
In East London, West Ham United host Leeds United at London Stadium, as the Hammers need a win to keep their place in the Premier League. They sit two points behind Tottenham with an inferior goal difference, needing Spurs to lose.
European qualification spots are also up for grabs. Liverpool, Bournemouth, Brighton can all qualify for the Champions League, if results fall their way. Sunderland, Brentford and Chelsea are vying for the final Europa League and Conference League spots.
NBA Conference Finals action continues
NBA Finals continues throughout this weekend, as the final four teams battle for championship success.
The last two matchups are OKC Thunder vs San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers vs New York Knicks.
Both games are decided in a best of seven series, with Thunder and Spurs currently tied 1-1 and the Knicks leading the Cavs 1-0.
The first game of the Thunder vs Spurs series went to overtime on Tuesday, as the Spurs came away with a win after a heroic 41-point game from Victor Wembanyama. The Thunder bounced back in the second match, as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with 30-points and nine assists.
The Knicks started their series in incredible fashion, rallying from 22 points down in the fourth quarter to complete one of the greatest NBA postseason comebacks against the Cavs on Wednesday. Star player, Jalen Brunson scored 38 points and six assists in the 11-point overtime win.
Both teams play their second game today and continue through to 1 June if the series goes the distance.
What else is on?
More events to look forward to are Suncorp Super Netball action, round 12 of the NRL season and the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
