Ahead of the third edition of Melbourne WebFest, we are profiling all the official selections that will be screening 10-12 July at Deakin Edge.
While on stage, Dayne appears simple, strange and overwhelmingly uncomfortable. The Sydney Morning Herald has labeled him an “awkward freak”, others are convinced he’s a comedy savant.
Filmmaker and comedian Mike Nayna is intrigued. He embeds himself video-journalistic style in the family home; documenting the creative development of Dayne’s highly anticipated second show about the life and times of Nelson Mandela.
There’s such a great comedy scene in Melbourne, what makes Dayne stand out from other comedians?
Most comics start out with an idea of what a comedian is and work backwards from that. Dayne has only ever seen stand-up as a microphone and an audience, what he does with that is magical.
You submitted your series in the non-fiction category of Melbourne WebFest, how close to the truth are these episodes?
No more or less tweaking than any other factual content. If you shoot as much footage as I did with a family like the Rathbones you’re going to end up with a string of incredible moments.
Describe the ultimate fan of your series?
I can’t decide between YouTube friends Nicole – “This is so fucking next level like genuinely inspirational it’s that new” Or Friggenboom “For real though can you get dick cancer from cats?
What’s special or different about your series?
Dayne’s dad made out with an actress on top of Dayne’s best friend in a bed while his mum watched.
Have you achieved the goals you set for this series?
Creatively yes. I would have liked to reach a bigger audience.
What’s your background as a content creator? And how did you approach this project differently to previous projects?
I’m a cameraman for the SBS news, took up comedy a few years ago and have made heaps of stuff since. This project was different in that it was a live-in thing. Living with the Rathbones was like being Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves. I’m not sure if I’ll ever acclimatise back to society.
From start to finish, how long did it take to complete this project?
8 months. Although I’d shot a bunch of footage of Dayne and his family a few years before we got funding.
