Mornington Peninsula hit by 3.2 magnitude quake

Residents as far as central Victoria reported feeling the tremors.

Residents on the Mornington Peninsula were woken by a 3.2 magnitude earthquake this morning.

The quake hit near Rosebud at 4:39am at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to Geoscience Australia.

More than 600 people have reported feeling the quake as of 11am. One of the reports came from as far away as Kyneton in central Victoria. A Rye resident told radio station 3AW that the tremor lasted about five to 10 seconds.

“I was just dozing away, it sounded like a snap and then a rumble,” he said.

Another woman reported feeling the shake in Warragul, 90 kilometers away from the epicenter.

“I woke with a start! I thought it was a nightmare, as a boulder made a “thunk” sound,” she commented on Facebook.

The shake was picked up by geoscience stations as far away as Cobar in northern New South Wales and Hobart in Tasmania.
