Multiple earthquakes rock Indonesia overnight

Due to their depth there should be minimal damage.

A series of earthquakes have shaken Bali overnight.

The first earthquake registered 7.0 on the Richter scale at 3:55am local time and was located near the Bali Sea on the north-east coast of Bali.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit 11 minutes later, before a third earthquake measuring 6.1 occurred at 4:08am. All three within close proximity.

The Euro/Mediterranean Seismological Center reported that one witness, located 270km southwest of the epicentre, said that the 7.0 magnitude earthquake is the worst they have felt in a while.

“First intense tremor in a long time, a frame fell. Duration a few seconds followed by a short aftershock. The windows shook.”

One witness reported waking up to their hotel swaying on X.

Indonesian disaster agency BNPB said that given the depth of the first earthquake, there should not be much damage.

“The quake is deep so it should not be destructive.”
