New party leaders for Nationals, Liberals and Greens in contest this week

Today, the Nationals arrive in Canberra to elect a new leader. This is soon to be followed by the Liberals and the Greens.

The National Party is set to elect their new party leader in parliament at 3pm today. This is soon to be followed by the Liberals and the Greens, later this week.

National Party members arrived in Canberra earlier today to determine the party’s leader. Current leader David Littleproud is up against Queensland Senator Matt Canavan.

Later this week, the Liberal National Party and the Greens will also re-elect their leader. This follows Peter Dutton’s loss in his Brisbane seat of Dickson and Adam Bandt’s loss of his longstanding seat in Melbourne.

Deputy Party Leader Sussan Ley and Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor have confirmed they will be running for the vacant Liberal leadership position. Other potential contenders include Shadow Defence Minister Andrew Hastie and Shadow Immigration Minister Dan Tehan.

Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price will be backing Taylor, after her controversial defection from the National Party to the Liberal Party.

Prior to Taylor’s confirmation of his intention to run, Liberal Senator Hollie Hughes criticised his capabilities.

Potential Greens candidates include Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Senator Mehreen Faruqi.

Polling booths closed over a week ago and votes are still being counted, with eight seats still in doubt.

The new Labor government is also set to announce its cabinet portfolios later today.
