Peter Bol exonerated after false positive

WADA plans to review the EPO testing process.

Australian middle-distance running star Peter Bol has been exonerated, following an initial positive drug test in January.

The two-time Olympian recently received the results of a drug test by Sport Integrity Australia (SIA), which had revealed a false positive.

Bol, who consistently claimed his innocence, took to his social media to reveal the good news.

“I have been exonerated. It was a false positive like I said all along! The news from Sport Integrity Australia today was a dream come true,” Bol wrote via Instagram.

Initially, a performance-enhancing drug, EPO, which increases the production of red blood cells and allows for greater endurance during events, was recorded.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recently announced it would review the EPO testing process, with the hope of avoiding future falsely positive samples.

Bol also said that it was great that the process will be reviewed and that it had taken a big toll on him.

“I am glad to see that WADA has agreed to review the EPO testing process to prevent future false positives,” he wrote.

“No one should ever experience what I have gone through this year.”

He added that his focus is on the upcoming World Athletic Championships in Hungary and says he feels ready to go.

Bol’s trial first began on 20 January, when he was suspended following a returned positive A sample for EPO. The sample was collected after an out-of-competition urine test taken on 11 October last year.

The Sudanese-born Australian track star has experienced a meteoric rise up the ranks ever since successfully qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

His growing list of achievements include a fourth-place finish in the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and a silver medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the 800m.
