PSG’ Luis Enrique says his team “were lucky” to win UEFA Super Cup

The Parisians beat a valiant Spurs side on penalties overnight.

Paris Saint-Germain have won their first ever UEFA Super Cup trophy, after beating Tottenham Hotspurs on penalties with the game finishing 2-2 after 90 minutes.

PSG continued their 2025 trophy haul overnight after a valiant comeback against the Europa League champions, winning 4-3 on penalties.

While the Parisians ended up victorious, Thomas Frank’s new look Spurs team impressed with a solid defensive display at Bluenergy Stadium in Udine.

PSG’s coach Luis Enrique said the Lillywhites would have deserved to take the trophy home.

“I think Tottenham deserved [to win] the match because we can feel that they were in form,” he said to TNT Sports after the game.

“We were very lucky in the last ten minutes.”

Spurs lined up in a 3-4-3, preferring defensive stability over attacking freedom, a clear contrast from the team under Ange Postecoglou. The Australian led the London club to their first major trophy in 17 years last season, before being sacked and subsequently replaced by Frank.

Frank’s team didn’t see much of the ball, but managed to limit PSG to just one big chance in the first 45 minutes, a shot by Ousmane Dembele from just inside the 16-yard box that was scuffed over the bar by the Balon D’or nominee.

The opening goal would come three minutes later.

After a long indirect free kick, the ball eventually found its way into the goal, after Joao Paulinha’s shot was tipped onto the bar by PSG’s ‘keeper and subsequently tipped into the net by Micky van de Ven.

A second goal from another defender would come straight after the break with Pedro Porro finding Christian Romero unmarked at the far post from yet another free kick. Romero’s header was within ‘keeper Chevalier’s reach, but the Frenchman was unable to keep the ball out of the net.

Spurs continued to be dangerous from set pieces and solid defensively, a sign of what’s to come under Frank.

“I think we played a very good game. We played against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best,” Frank said to TNT Sports.

“We had them exactly where we wanted for 80 minutes until the 2-1 goal,” he added.

With the game heading towards its end, PSG’s Vitinha scored a great driven finish from the outside of the box to give Luis Enrique’s team a lifeline.

The Parisians continued to push for an equaliser and it finally came in the 4th minute of added time when Ousmane Dembele’s cross from the right side of the box found Concalo Ramos who headed the ball well out of Vicario’s reach.

With the game ending in a draw after 90 minutes, it was to be decided by a penalty shootout.

The shootout ended in a 4-3 win to Paris Saint-Germain, after goal scorer van de Ven’s penalty was saved by Chevalier and Mathys Tel’s strike missed the target.

Their UEFA Super Cup win is PSG’s fourth trophy in 2025 along with the Champions League, French Cup and Ligue 1.
