Sharapova returns for fourth round

Controversial tennis player Maria Sharapova exits US Open fourth round.

Former world number one female tennis player Maria Sharapova has crashed out of the US Open – the last Grand Slam in 2017.

Sharapova returning from a 15-month doping suspension, lost in the fourth round to Anastasija Sevastova 5-7,6-4, 6-2 after an impressive run.

Sharapova, who has missed most of this year’s Grand Slam action due to her ban was accepted in a wildcard spot for the US Open.

“It’s been a really great ride in the last week,” Sharapova told the Age.

“Obviously coming off a loss, it’s a quick turnaround in order to reflect all the positives that happened in the last eight or nine days.

“But ultimately I can take a lot from this week. It’s great to get that major out of the way. It was an incredible opportunity. I’m very thankful for the opportunity. I did my best.

“I can be proud of that.”

Sharapova took the banned drug meldonium, which was one of the drugs that was placed on the updated World Anti Doping Agency banned list, after her quarterfinal loss to Serna Williams in last year’s Australian Open semi final.

The initial ban for the substance was two years a statement from the International Tennis Federation declared, however, the Court of Arbitration of Sport reduced the sentence to 15 months.
