Supermarket blaze causes over $15m damage

Two teenage boys have been arrested.

Two 14-year-old boys have been arrested and are set to be charged with arson following a supermarket fire in the Adelaide Hills yesterday.

The fire which broke out at a Woolworths in Stirling just after 2pm Sunday, reportedly caused more than $15 million damage.

Country Fire Service (CFS) and Metropolitan crews were called to the scene. It took more than 100 firefighters several hours to get the blaze under control.

The supermarket was open at the time of the fire, however all customers and workers escaped uninjured.

Mount Barker Road was temporarily closed to traffic as thick smoke drifted from the cordoned off supermarket.

There were reports of aerosol canisters going off in the supermarket before emergency crews arrived at the scene.

CFS executive director of operations Cameron Devey said investigators would return to the scene today to determine what caused the inferno. He thanked all the firefighters for their swift response.

“When they first arrived, they made every effort to get inside but that fire was just too hot to do anything with, so they went defensive and fought the fire from outside,” he said.

“Our volunteer firefighters are part of the community, and our hearts go out to everybody today who won’t be turning up to work to businesses that are impacted.”

Police said the two boys will be granted bail to appear at the Mount Barker Youth Court at a later date.
