At least three more deaths have been reported this morning in the southern Europe wildfires that have been impacting a number of countries, including Spain, Greece and Turkey.
The death toll has continued to increase, with many struggling to fight against the constant blazes, winds and heat all an effect of the ever-changing weather.
The three deaths reported overnight occurred across Spain, Turkey and Albania. Two men and a 4-year-old child were killed.
Residents in Greece have been forced to flee from homes, children evacuated from hospitals and elderly members of retirement homes removed.
Spanish environment minister Sara Aagesen told Cadena Ser radio that climate change is a “clear indicator” of the fires.
“The fires are one of the parts of the impact of climate change, which is why we have to do all we can when it comes to prevention,” she said.
Firefighters and local residents throughout southern Europe are fighting against nearly 200 blazes, but record temperatures and strong winds have made it difficult.
“Today is also expected to be very difficult as in most areas of the country a very high risk of fire is forecast,” fire spokesperson Vassilis Vathrakoyiannis said on Wednesday.
