US President Donald Trump has threatened to “blow up” Oman if they don’t “behave” in the Straight of Hormuz.
Speaking to a reporter following a cabinet meeting yesterday, Trump said the Straight of Hormuz wouldn’t be controlled by anyone and nations in the region would need to accept that.
The comments followed an Iranian media report claiming a draft agreement would see Iran and Oman jointly control the waters as part of a framework to end the war. Trump rejected the proposal saying the straight was international waters.
“They would like to control it,” he said.
“Nobody’s going to control it. It’s international waters.”
Oman is one of the US’ oldest gulf partners with the country hosting American military cooperation programs. Speaking to Al Jazeera, DAWN activist group advisory director Raed Jarrar said the statements violated the UN charter.
“Threatening to ‘blow up’ an Arab country because its waters happen to sit along an oil route Washington wants reopened is the same lawless logic that produced this war in February, and it is the clearest possible signal that any ceasefire this administration brokers will hold only until the next time the president loses his temper at a cabinet meeting,” he said.
Oman is the 15th country Trump has threatened to attack in his time as presidency.
The nation has so far remained neutral, not endorsing or opposing Trump’s statement or the draft agreement.
