Trump turns himself in to authorities in Atlanta over election charges

Trump faces 13 charges related to the election.

Former US President Donald Trump has been processed on 13 felony charges after yielding to authorities at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta.

The booking comes after the 45th President was indicted for allegedly attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the state of Georgia.

In the 20 minutes he was inside the jailhouse, authorities had taken Trump’s mugshot, which has subsequently been released, and given him the inmate number P01135809.

Trump paid the US$200,000 bond for release before his arrival.

The former president is one of 19 who have been charged in relation to the election. Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani turned himself in to authorities yesterday.

Trump made history by being the first former president to have a mugshot, and is the first former president to face criminal charges.

Upon his release he spoke to the media from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, maintaining his innocence.

“I believe it is a very sad day for America which should never happen,” he said.

“I did nothing wrong, and everybody knows it.”

The four criminal charges that Trump now faces have seemingly not harmed his push for election. According to polls, he remains the favourite to be the Republican party nominee for the 2024 election.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has asked a Georgia judge to set October 23 as the trial date for Trump and the co-defendants.
