Weekend sports wrap

The Boomers finished their World Cup campaign on a high.

In a busy weekend in sport, Alex De Minaur advances to the fourth round at the US Open, Australia dominates their T20 series, AFLW season kicks off and the Boomers’ World Cup campaign draws to a close.

De Minaur is the last Aussie standing at US Open

Australia’s last hope in the US Open, Alex De Minaur, has breezed past Nicolas Jarry in straight sets to claim a convincing victory and a spot in the round of 16.

De Minaur dropped just six games in a match that was decided in under two hours as the Aussie continued his stellar form to win 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

The Demon will now face third seed Daniil Medvedev tomorrow and hopes to secure a spot in the quarter finals. De Minaur has defeated the Russian twice in the past 10 months, including a straight-sets victory last month in Toronto.

Fellow Aussie Rinky Hijikata was smashed in the fourth round this morning against 10th seed Frances Tiafoe, but the 22-year-old recorded his career best Grand Slam result.

Head masterclass guides Australia to T20 series sweep

A blistering knock of 91 runs from Travis Head has handed Australia a 3-0 sweep in their T20 series against South Africa.

Head’s career best knock helped the side chase down 191 with 13 balls to spare and five wickets in hand as Josh Inglis (42 off 22) and Marcus Stoinis (36 off 21) also contributed well.

Mitch Marsh was clinical in the first two matches scoring 92-not-out and 79-not-out, belting 24 fours and eight sixes across the series.

Australia will take on South Africa on Thursday night for the first of five One Day International Matches.

AFLW season kicks off

Geelong Cats sit atop of the AFLW ladder after a thumping 48-point win over the Western Bulldogs in round one as Georgie Prespakis starred with 34 disposals.

Thousands of fans turned out for a big weekend of AFLW headlined by a clash between Melbourne and Collingwood on Friday night as the Demons secured a 42-point victory.

In other games, Carlton held off a rampant Gold Coast side to win by two points, Richmond defeated Brisbane by six points, Sydney accounted for GWS in a tight contest and Fremantle did enough to claim a victory against West Coast.

North Melbourne started its season well obliterating St Kilda by 40 points, the Adelaide showdown went the way of the Crows and Essendon beat Hawthorn by 19 points.

Boomers’ World Cup campaign finishes on a high

Boomers concluded their World Cup campaign on a positive note as the side defeated Georgia by 16 points on Sunday night, 100-84.

While a few earlier losses against Germany and Slovenia meant the Aussies weren’t in a position to compete for a medal, they finished the tournament in style.

Patty Mills led all scorers with 19 points, while Dante Exum dropped 18 and Duop Reath added 16 in a fine shooting display.

Josh Giddey contributed 15 points and four assists to bring his tournament tally to 97 points which led the team. At 20 years of age, he is the youngest Australian to top score at a major tournament.

The Boomers will now put their focus into preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
