New News 2015 program released

New News 2015 will feature discussions on a variety of topics relating to the future of journalism and the media industry.

The Centre for Advancing Journalism has announced the program for New News 2015.

New News is “the nation’s leading forum for public discussion of the strengths and ills of journalism and the news media”.

The three-day event consists of panels, workshops and discussions with some of the most respected people in the industry, including keynote addresses by ABC Managing Director Mark Scott, Peter Greste and Ross Gittens.

New News hosts a variety of panels of interest to emerging journalists as well as seasoned reporters.

Sessions that journalism and media students may be particularly interested in include:

So You Want to Be a Journalist, a panel on how to break into the media industry hosted by a variety of people with different media positions.

The Pitch: Access the Editors, a chance to pitch your story ideas to a variety of editors from publications such as Crikey and Saturday Age.

The Freelancing Life, a discussion on the current state of freelance journalism in Australia and how to work as a freelancer.

Other topics include the changes in the reporting of violence against women, building an online presence, the ethics of branded content and the changing landscape of Australian journalism.

New News will run from 8-10 October and while most sessions are free, booking is required.

More information on individual sessions can be found here.
