Explosion at Geelong refinery threatens fuel supply

An explosive overnight fire at the Viva Energy Geelong Refinery has slashed petrol production and raised fears of supply disruptions across Australia, with authorities warning the full extent of the damage is still unknown.

An explosive fire at Geelong’s Viva Energy facility broke out last night, threatening the petrol supplies across the nation.

The oil refinery, which supplies about half of Victoria’s and 10 percent of Australia’s fuel, was reported on fire at 11:05pm last night.

Rescue Victoria Assistant Chief Fire Officer Michael McGuinness said in a press conference this morning that no Viva workers were exposed to the fire. Leaks were detected detected early and water deluge systems were turned on remotely.

“The fire went from a small fire through several explosions to being quite a large, intense fire,” he said.

Viva Chief Executive Scott Wyatt told Sky News the facility will continue to operate, though at limited capacity.

“Production is not our primary priority today,” he said. “Today it’s getting the site safe.”

The facility’s diesel and jet fuel production remain in tact, with the fire predominantly affecting petrol production.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen told Sky News the government will work closely with Viva moving forward but said easing the fuel crisis still mainly depends on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

“There’s no need to buy more or less fuel than you would,” he said.

Authorities are yet to determine the full extent of the damage.
