United States Special Envoy for Peace Jared Kushner has met with Hamas leaders in Egypt as negotiations restart over a Gaza ceasefire and peace plan.
Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, met Hamas political leader Khalil al-Hayya on Sunday. The meeting lasted more than two hours and included officials from Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye.
The parties discussed Trump’s 15-point plan, which includes Hamas giving up its weapons while Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza. A new Palestinian civilian administration would then take responsibility for governing the territory.
Hamas has recently said that it supports the plan, but wants Israel to stop its attacks and withdraw from parts of Gaza before the next stage begins.
Al-Hayya, has called on mediators and officials from the countries who attend the meeting to compel Israel to consider and approved the peace plan.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the plan on August 9, claiming that Hamas must be fully disarmed before Israeli forces withdraw.
The mediating countries have released a statement of their joint disapproval of Israel’s rejection of the peace plan.
“Israel bears direct and full responsibility for any consequences resulting from its continued rejection, obstruction, delay or non-compliance, including any resulting deterioration of the situation on the ground and disruption of ending the war in Gaza,” the joint statement said.
Kushner will meet with Netanyahu on Monday.
