Journalism ethics lectures today

In keeping with our "open class" policy for guest lectures in La Trobe's journalism, media, and cinema studies subjects, all students and staff are invited to attend two lectures being held today focusing on journalism ethics.

At midday today, Mike Dobbie from the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) will be a guest of the Writing for Media class to discuss ethics on the job.Mike is a former business journalist who now edits Alliance publications and is  involved  in campaigns promoting quality journalism and working with colleagues on the Future of Journalism project. He  also provides training for journalists in the Asia-Pacific region through the International Federation of Journalists. Full details here.

Also this afternoon, Dr Wendy Bowler will be lecturing in the Dilemmas in Journalism class for the first time to discuss the ethical issues raised by the use of confronting images in journalism. Wendy will discuss the story of one of the most potent images from the events of September 11, 2001, leading to an exploration of how the ethical issues of showing images of war, death, and grief. The lecture will be held at 4 pm in the Economics Lecture Theatre. Full details here. All staff and students are welcome to attend both of these lectures.
