Tom Cowie – from graduate to today’s guest lecturer

A few months ago Tom wanted a job as a journalist. Then he landed one. Now La Trobe Uni has asked him back as a guest lecturer to tell the story behind his diary as a graduating journalism student and his experiences so far as a working journalist.

He only graduated from his journalism degree three months ago, but Tom Cowie will return to La Trobe University this afternoon in a new role as guest lecturer.

Tom, who is now a full-time journalist with Crikey, will field questions posed by 50 first-year students in a new subject called The Interview. Last week each member of the class submitted an assignment that required them to design an introduction and list of questions to ask Tom ahead of his appearance this week. Following Wednesday’s lecture, the same students will each write a profile piece about Tom based on the discussion in the lecture and their additional research.

Here at upstart, we’re more than a little bit interested in what Tom might be asked. After all, this is same person who began the year editing this very publication, and who has since run the spectacular and successful #tomwantsajob campaign to launch his career as a journalist.

In the meantime we also want to give upstart readers an open invitation to attend the lecture, which will be held in the Martin Building Lecture Theatre (Room 141) at 3pm today at La Trobe’s Bundoora campus (the building can be found in the F6 square of this map). And if you can’t make it this afternoon, feel free to submit a question below.

Most of Tom’s upstart pieces can be found here, and of course, and you can see what’s he’s been writing about in Crikey by following this link.
