Venus Williams has received a wildcard entry to this year’s US Open tournament, making her the oldest singles participant at the competition in 45 years.
At 46 years of age, the seven-time singles champion returns to her home tournament following her first-round exit last year to Czech opponent Karolina Muchova.
The singles champion was a wildcard entry last year as well where she treated fans to her first sighting at the tournament since 2023. She continues to break records at her age, featuring in many singles matches in the past few years.
Williams has enjoyed the sights from the top of the summit twice in US Open history where she won back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001. She first appeared at the tournament in 1997.
While Williams has already secured her place in the tournament, champion sister Serena Williams is expected to land the final wildcard selection in the women’s draw, if she chooses to take it.
The 44-year-old will be chasing her seventh US Open title when the tournament officially kicks off on 30 August.
The Williams sisters featured in doubles action in the Cincinnati Open on Monday but were beaten in a match tiebreaker during their first-round exit. This was their first doubles since 2022.
Aryna Sabalenka will be standing in the sisters’ way as she enters the tournament as the clear favorite, looking to hunt down her third consecutive US Open title.
