This morning, the Bureau of Meteorology updated the flood warnings in NSW, issuing a severe weather warning to residents of the Mid North Coast detailing “life threatening flash flooding”.
“Areas of heavy rainfall are expected to persist through Thursday as a weak low-pressure system develops within the trough, and it slowly moves further southwards throughout the day,” the warning said.
This comes after the body of a 63-year-old man was found Wednesday afternoon in his flooded residence in the Moto region.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences on X this morning.
“It is devastating to hear the tragic news that a man has died at a residence impacted by flooding on the New South Wales Mid North Coast,” he wrote.
“The thoughts of all Australians are with his loved ones and the community at this time.”
In the past 24 hours, the NSW State Emergency Services (SES) has responded to 1,023 incidents, including 339 flood rescues. Approximately 50,000 people have been isolated due to these floods.
NSW SES Chief Superintendent of State Operations Dallas Burnes told the ABC that they still have over 100 rescues outstanding and is urging residents to follow warnings. They have labelled the conditions as “quite treacherous”.
“With that rain continuing to fall, we’re going to see these rivers stay heightened,” he said.
“If people do receive an evacuation order or warning or other, could they please follow it? Our ability to rescue is quite delayed due to the conditions.”
