Journalism cadetship with magazine publisher

The publisher of New Scientist, Travel Weekly, Australian Doctor, Money Management, Lawyers Weekly and B&T is searching for a cadet journalist to join its team.

Reed Business Information (RBI) publishes leading business to business magazines and newspapers across a variety of sectors including healthcare, travel, media, finance, mining and legal. Marquee brands include New Scientist, Travel Weekly, Australian Doctor, Money Management, Lawyers Weekly and B&T.

The RBI Editorial Cadetship Program will be a 12-month editorial training program for cadet journalists that will consist of both on the job and off the job learning. The on-the-job learning will involve a formal rotation program within RBI where the cadet is placed under the direct supervision of an editor for a defined period of time before rotating to another editorial group and another supervising editor.

For the off-the-job learning component the cadets will join the SBS cadets for an intensive training program organised by an external trainer. Learning shorthand is a key component of this training but there will also be sessions on news and feature writing, investigative journalism, media law and much more.

To apply, you must provide:

– A 300 word description as to why you should be selected to participate in this program. Within this piece we would like you to explain what you have done previously to improve your journalist skills and/or to increase your own editorial impact as well as your relevant work experience;

– A 300 word demonstration of your ability as a journalist. This could be a past story you’ve written that you’re proud of (if so give context as to why it’s important), a random piece of colour writing that’ll catch our attention or anything else that will highlight your ability to write;

– A written reference from your current editor/publisher or suitable referee; and

– An up-to-date copy of your resume or CV.

Applications should be made to: Dan Uglow on Travel Weekly by COB Tuesday, 18 November 2011 on daniel.uglow@reedbusiness.com.au.
