The Sydney Morning Herald and the Sun-Herald are currently accepting applications for a trainee visual journalist (graphic designer).
The successful candidate will be trained to contribute high quality graphics and design to Fairfax’s printed and digital titles, liaising with page editors, story editors, the news desk, the night desk, and with external production staff.
This is a graphic design job, not a reporting role, or a pathway to a reporting or writing job.
Applicants should have or be able to quickly develop:
An ability to identify, articulate and develop excellence in visual journalism
Creativity, demonstrated flair and graphics/illustration ability
Understanding of print journalism, in particular that of the Sydney Morning Herald and smh.com.au
Ability to meet deadlines and balance priorities
Ability to liaise with outsourced production staff
Ability to work autonomously, and work in a team environment
Flexibility and patience
Ability to work in a high pressure environment
Attention to detail and adaptability
Strong understanding of house design
Excellent working knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Cyber, or the willingness to learn them.
