Melbourne WebFest selections: Pairings

The next preview in our Melbourne WebFest selections series is Pairings, created by Ed Robinson and Jodie Younse.

Ahead of the inaugural Melbourne Web Series Festival on 20 July, we’re profiling all 30 series that made the Official Selection list. Next up is Pairings, created by Ed Robinson and Jodie Younse.

In short, pairings is about three things: Nerds, food and women.

Filmed in Los Angeles, the food-themed comedy series is about a guy named Alan, who happens to be terrible with women. In order to overcome this, his family and friends convince him that ‘the way to a woman’s heart is through her stomach.’ As Alan starts cooking his way through the dating world, he discovers things about women, himself, and the lasting memories of food.

When asked what inspired her to create the series, Jodie admitted, ” in all honestly the personal experience of Ed being such an amazing cook, it is one of the qualities that attracted me to him. This made me think that I can’t be the only girl attracted to a guy who can cook.” With that said, it looks like the way to a woman’s heart is through her stomach.

Why should people watch your series?

Anyone who has a family, enjoys cooking or is a nerd will be able to relate to the characters and themes of Pairings.

What do you want people to take away from your series?

Viewers should leave hungry, not just for more Pairings but just hungry in general and want to eat or even make something delicious.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome in production?

Everyone always says funding, which was definitely a challenge but we stupidly (or possibly brilliantly) wrote a Sushi Restaurant location into the script. Finding an affordable and suitable location for this was one of our biggest challenges.

Is it an ongoing project? If so, can you give us some clues about what comes next?

We have already written the script for the second season and know where we want the story to go. Now we just need to do some fundraising to kickoff pre-production!

Why make a web series?

Ed and I are big foodie fans and you can tell. We also love food movies like Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, Like Water for Chocolate, Julie & Julia, even Ratatoullie but we hadn’t seen an episodic show that had a large food presence so we wanted to fill that gap. The web was the perfect place for a show like this because of the popularity of food blogs and we could easily share recipes from the show online.
