Melbourne WebFest selections: The Wrong Guys For the Job

Next up in our Melbourne WebFest preview series, we look at The Wrong Guys for the Job, created by Sutton McKee and Matthew Tibbenham.

Ahead of the inaugural Melbourne Web Series Festival on 20 July, we’re profiling all 30 series that made the Official Selection list. Next up is The Wrong Guys for the Job, created by Sutton McKee and Matthew Tibbenham

Inspired by the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Guy Richie and Edgar Wright,  this series is for the enthusiasts of dark humor and occasional violence. Filmed in Los Angeles, The Wrong Guy for the Job tells the story of two inept criminals who are trying to make it in the local mafia.

The comedy series sets itself apart from other web series by a unique and interactive twist: the audience gets to decide how each episode ends. Tarantino fans are able to amuse themselves by the ability to choose their favorite endings, allowing them to interact with the show on a new level.

“Don’t take it too seriously. It’s just supposed to be a good time and shouldn’t be read into. We hope it makes you laugh and have a better day because you saw it.”

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome in production? The biggest challenge was definitely the limited budget and resources we had. Season one came out of the creator’s own pockets and every penny had to be used. Also, the interactive nature of the series became a challenge while shooting because we had to jump around the script from one ending to the next from take to take, which sometimes really confused the crew and actors. One minute we’d be shooting the first ending of an episode and then without changing camera angles or anything else, we’d shoot part of ending three. Our actors did a great job going with the flow despite the confusion.

Is it an ongoing project? If so, can you give us some clues about what comes next?  Yes. We are hoping to raise funds and shoot season two this year. Larry and Charlie will get into even more trouble in season two and continue some of the stories we started in season one. We have some hilarious situations to throw them into and we can’t wait to show everyone. The interactive aspect might change a bit depending on feedback from our fans. So look forward to more episodes in 2014!

Why make a web series? We decided to create a web series because we feel that it’s our generation’s launching pad for a career in film directing and screenwriting. It’s a great way to learn every aspect of filmmaking from development to distribution and marketing, where doing short films doesn’t necessarily teach you all these aspects. It’s like being a show runner for a television show, but you have to work with a strict budget and an extremely fast schedule that really forces you to grow and learn how to be a better filmmaker.
