The Trail Wrap: Day 10

Day 10 of the Trail Wrap details Labor's new policy, Tony Abbott putting his foot in his mouth - again - and the Greens going on the attack.

Double-figures! Don’t they just grow up so fast. This little campaign of ours is old enough to feature numbers in the #TrailWrap title, removing a great deal of confusion from our Twitter account.

However, the day was once again dominated by a Tony Abbott faux pas, taking some of the spotlight away from another Labor policy announcement.

Labor policy announcement

  • A re-elected Labor government would spend $60 million to improve the Bureau of Metereology’s capacity to respond to floods, cyclones and storm surges and $209 million on a vocational education program.
  • While it’s not policy as such, it’s worth pointing out that Kevin Rudd has joined Tony Abbott in ruling iut negotiating with minor parties and independents to form a minority government.

Coalition policy announcement

  • It’s not quite policy, but Tony Abbott said the Liberal-National parties would preference Labor over the Greens, which brings danger to the only Greens’ MP Adam Bandt.

Must read

The ABC’s Annabel Crabb has written a great piece looking at the role of the daughters of the candidates in the campaign thus far.

Quote of the day

Greens Leader Christine Milne took to the airwaves this morning, hitting back against the proposed blacklisting of her party going on both sides of the floor.

Milne feistily attack Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, pointing out the borderline hypocrisy in some of his recent statements.

The Guardian had her remarks as such: “Tony Abbott can’t bang on about the evils of coalition governments when he’s the leader of … the Coalition.”

Tweet of the day

This little nugget of sass from Sarah Hanson-Young takes today’s top tweet spot.

It refers to Abbott’s quip that the push for marriage equality is just a fashion, which has generated a large backlash and he has since tried to paddle furiously away from. In a previous tweet Hansen-Young admonished Abbott for his #sexappeal gaffe, linking to an article contending that in any other workplace context, that comment could be considered harassment.

Although taking top points for snark, it must be said, Sarah, the 90s called and they want their joke back. If Tony Abbott actually operated his Twitter account (instead of seemingly employing a team of staffer trolls to tap jogging-related tweets out for him) then that’s exactly what he could have shot back. In a perfect world.

Slip of the day

Tony and Bridget Abbott laced up the Nikes to hit Brisbane’s equivalent on the tan this morning, dragging News Ltd journo Lauren Novak along for the ride.

Being up and active in the morning is by no means a slip, but a political correspondent for our most all-encompassing media conglomerate deliver such a hard-hitting tidbits as “the incline was deceptively persistent and it was about here I started to wish I was covering Kevin Rudd’s campaign instead, given his morning routine is a more manageable brisk walk“.

We all knew News Ltd was going hard on KRudd, but criticising his morning routine is a bit tough.
