Journalism scholarship for upstart’s sports editor

Paddy Naughtin received the $3,000 Cameron Thompson Memorial Scholarship in Wodonga yesterday.

Cameron Thompson’s Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually, and is “designed to encourage young would-be journalists from the southern Riverina and North East Victoria,” wrote the Border Mail

Naughtin, who hails from Beechworth, was selected from a shortlist of three candidates.

The scholarship and trophy was presented to him at a ceremony yesterday by the editor of Albury-Wodonga’s Border Mail, Di Thomas.

“I applied for the scholarship early this year but I hadn’t actually thought I would get it. It was an amazing surprise when they rang me last week,” said Naughtin.

“There’s an internship attached to it as well, which is really exciting,” he added.

“Now I definitely know what I’ll be doing this summer.”

Naughtin is a third-year Bachelor of Journalism student at La Trobe University. He is upstart’s current sports editor, and he is working as a media assistant for Melbourne Heart.
