Melbourne WebFest selections: Ruby Skye P.I.

Our latest Melbourne WebFest profile follows the story of a teenage detective in Jill Golick's series Ruby Skye P.I..

Ahead of the inaugural Melbourne Web Series Festival on 20 July, we’re profiling all 30 series that made the Official Selection list. Next up is Ruby Skye P.I., created by Jill Golick.

Filmed on-location at the University of Toronto, Ruby Skye P.I is the story of a brilliant, stubborn and curious teen detective Ruby Skye who will stop at nothing in her pursuit of truth, justice and… well, personal curiousity.

With the reluctant help of her tech-savvy sister Hailey, Ruby manages to land in a lot of hot water en route to a cool solution.

In season two, The Haunted Library Ruby Skye investigates a possible ghost in the spooky old O’Deary Library. Before long, she stumbles on a second mystery: a missing will. With the fate of the library and a fortune hanging in the balance, Ruby follows the clues lead through some of the most beloved books in children’s and young adult fiction. With the “ghost” interfering every step of the way, Ruby finds herself in a race to find the will in time to save the library.

What inspired your series?

I’ve always loved reading and watching mysteries. The idea of a girl detective who was just obsessively curious and frequently wrong made me laugh: Ruby Skye was born.

Why should people watch your series?

It’s great, high quality entertainment for viewers of any age. Mystery fans will enjoy the interactive element – the ability to study the clues as Ruby finds them and to solve the puzzles to unlock additional content.

How do you reach your audience?

We have a very strong social media presence. We reach out to teachers and parent bloggers to help us reach a younger audience. We also partner with video platforms like Koldcast, Blip and Daily Motion to work at engaging their audiences.

Why make a web series?

For the incredible creative satisfaction. After a career of writing television, it is so much fun to make a show in this new way. We make the series to satisfy our closest partners – our audience. For a storyteller, knowing your audience, getting their feedback quickly and directly is truly amazing.
