MWF 2014 Official Selection: Libres

Alex Rodrigo's drama Libres is the story of a group of young Spanish idealists who are looking for guidance in their lives and a way of achieving their dreams.

Ahead of Melbourne WebFest 2014 we are profiling all the series in the Official Selection as well as the “Second Look” series.

At the height of the Spanish social crisis, seven young people leave their lifestyles and squat in an abandoned house at the Pyrenees Mountains to create a small horizontal society. They are faced with many challenges: the need for supplies, the difficult relations with the nearby village and above all, their personal relationships.

Creator Alex Rodrigo wanted to produce Libres as a web series because it is the best way to make such a personal project without depending on other sources of financing or distribution.

The series is filmed in the Pyrenees Mountains and Madrid.

What inspired your series?

We were mostly inspired by what is happening in Spain right now. We wanted to tell a story about people that are dissatisfied with the current system, who have decided to start from scratch and are creating a new way of life. A story about people who seek freedom in politics, economics and society, but above all, they look for personal freedom and they want to find all these living in nature and reconnecting with their most genuine selves.

What do you want people to take away from your series?

The idea that it is possible to change your life and your environment in different ways. It could be on a big or small scale depends on your needs; you just have to look around you.

How do you finance your series?

We use crowd funding, personal funds of the producer and collaboration of more than 200 people.

Trivia: please tell us a quirky and/or interesting fact about yourself or team that’s unrelated to your web series.

While we were shooting the first episode, the police eviction in which five actors were dressed as policemen, there was a fight in the bar down the street. A person was injured and the real police arrived to check the situation. Our actors had to run inside the building and wait there until it was all sorted out.
