The Trail Wrap: Day 21

The Coalition launched its official campaign while Kevin Rudd gave a rather bizarre interview to the ABC's Insiders program on day 21.

As is often the case with official campaign launches, it was all about one person today.

Labor policy announcement

  • No new policy announcements as far as we could tell, though Kevin Rudd did admit Labor got it wrong with the carbon tax in this awkward interview on ABC’s Insiders program.

Coalition policy announcement

  • Tony Abbott said an elected Coalition government would establish “Trade Support Loans” from July 1 next year to provide apprentices with interest free loans of up to $20,000 over four years.

Must read

The West Australian newspaper produced the “word cloud”, which looks at the different words uttered by the two main leaders.  Fascinating stuff, for the politics nerds. Check it out here.

Quote of the day

Tony Abbott was on Network Ten’s The Bolt Report, speaking to presenter Andrew Bolt.  When he told Bolt he didn’t take anything for granted – in relation to behind ahead in the polls – Bolt gave his rather predictable observation.

“I think you have this own sewn up.”

Tweet of the day

Today’s prize goes to a non-politician.  This one speaks for itself.

Slip of the day

Sometimes it’s the very people one recruits who shoots you, and themselves, in the foot.

The former Queensland premier and new Labor recruit, Peter Beattie, appeared on Network Ten’s Meet the Press program where he wasn’t exactly praising of the current government.

“Minority governments are bloody shockers,” he said.
